PROJECTS

Description:

Bring the art of Mosaics to your Quilt making. Relaxation, enjoyment, and learning how to create this charming honeybee design using Heidi Proffetty’s mosaic quilting techniques are the main objectives of this multi-day, project-based retreat. Students need to bring very few supplies because practically everything they need is in the kit, and bringing your sewing machine is optional.

Day 1 – Meet and greet National Quilt Instructor Heidi Proffetty, featured presentation on Mosaic Quilting, Q&A, and in- person viewing of Mosaic Quilts!

Day 2 – Start the day learning how to hand draw a mosaic pictorial design, then sit back and relax for the rest of the day while you puzzle together this lovely honey bee mosaic quilt. This is an excellent opportunity to catch up with your friends, make new ones, or just relax by yourself.

Day 3 – Pick up where you left off and finish your mosaic design, watch as Heidi teaches how to properly set up your sewing machine for success and demonstrates how she does her micro-stipple quilting method.

Day 4: Prepare your mosaic quilt top by securing the mosaic fabric pieces for safe return home, followed by Heidi’s quilt finishing tips like layering, squaring up, and binding, a final Q&A, and the opportunity to purchase any mosaic quilt making supplies.

Bonus: On Days 2 and 3, Heidi will provide a brief after-hours demonstration of how she draws a mosaic on her iPad and will have her digital cutter set up to show how she cuts fabric pieces for a mosaic quilt.

During the retreat you will learn:

*How to create a mosaic pictorial drawing with photograph as a guide
*Specific terminology used in both traditional and modern mosaic art design. Gain knowledge of basic mosaic art concepts such as patterns, flow, shapes, and color to build a mosaic composition
*Identify values in a photograph and how to convert those values to shades of color to assist you in selecting the appropriate fabrics
*Learn how to design a mosaic using classic raw edge applique methods, pencil and paper to draw and scissors to cut the mosaic shapes
*Then, discover some unconventional tools like an iPad and digital art programs to draw, trace, color, and produce vector files that can be utilized with an electronic digital cutting machine to cut hundreds of small, detailed mosaic shapes from fabric
*Understand how to choose the right fabrics and how to properly treat and bond your textiles to get the greatest raw edge fabric outcomes with the least amount of fraying
*Learn Heidi’s newest and simplest method for building the mosaic design without the need for a light box, numbered patterns, stencils, fabric marking equipment
*Recognize appropriate threads and needles to use to secure and draw your attention to the mosaic design
*Discuss quilt finishing tips like layering, free-motion micro-stippling quilting, and binding.
